Saint Bruno

[st_bruno_icon.jpg]

While this icon was written according to very strict Russo/Slovonic canons, it is also very unique: Since Bruno was never beatified by either the Eastern or Western divisions of our one faith, iconographers have generally ignored his blessed image. Thus, this unworthy servant of God was given the great gift of being asked to prayerfully develop the prototype. I can share with you, now, in all humility, that the spirit of Bruno, in his eternal aspect, had much more to do with how this icon appears that any crude abilities of my own. Since his life spanned the Great Schism, his name is in Greek and his motto is in Latin. The cloudy blue background from which he emerges is a sign of his devotion to the Mother of God. His staff is a symbol of his total dependance upon God for both his physical and spiritual support, and as you can see, the Blessed Virgin walks with him at each step of his journey. His halo is gilded over clay to show both his material and his eternal holiness, and his halo is banded by rings of red and white to show that he is surrounded by both the blood of Christ and the pure light of God. His image is contained in an indent which represents the Ark of Noah and the cradling hands of God, which held not only the Ark of the Covenant, but holds us all as well. The red clay in the border represents God's creation of Adam from the clay of the earth, and the green line in the border represents the New Testament and as a reminder that Jesus is the new Adam.

Copies of the new icon of St. Bruno are finally available. It has been difficult getting quality prints of this icon that fully captured the color and detail of the original, but now (after three costly failed attempts) we have beautiful prints on archival paper in two different sizes:

8.25"x10.25" printed on 8.5"x11" paper. The extra margin is to allow for framing. If you wish, you can trim the margin and mount the image on a properly sized piece of 1/4" or 1/2" plywood using photo adhesive. (I use "3M General Purpose 45 Spray Adhesive.)

10.625"x13.375" printed on 11"x14" paper. This is very close to the original size. Additionally, the larger version is hand retouched and the halos of Bruno and the Blessed Virgin have been hand gilded in 23K gold-- exactly like the original.

Prices are as follows:

The small icon is US$40 plus $5 shipping and handling ($10 for orders outside the US)

The large icon, including the gilding and retouch is US$125 plus $5 shipping and handling ($10 for orders outside the US)
